TYPES OF RESISTOR Empty TYPES OF RESISTOR

VARIABLE RESISTOR
A variable resistor is a resistor of which the electric resistance value can be adjusted. A variable resistor is in essence an electro-mechanical transducer and normally works by sliding a contact (wiper) over a resistive element. When a variable resistor is used as a potential divider by using 3 terminals it is called a potentiometer. When only two terminals are used, it functions as a variable resistance and is called a rheostat. Electronically controlled variable resistors exist, which can be controlled electronically instead of by mechanical action. These resistors are called digital potentiometers.

     Types:
Potentiometer
The potentiometer is the most common variable resistor. It functions as a potential divider and is used to generate a voltage signal depending on the position of the potentiometer.

( Potentiometer symbol IEC standard )

Rheostat
Rheostats are very similar in construction to potentiometers, but are not used as a potential divider, but as a variable resistance. They use only 2 terminals instead of the 3 terminals potentiometers use. One connection is made at one end of the resistive element, the other at the wiper of the variable resistor.

Digital resistor
A digital variable resistor is a type of variable resistor where the change of resistance is not performed by mechanical movement but by electronic signals. They can change resistance in discrete steps and are often controlled by digital protocols such as I2C or by simple up/down signals.
TYPES OF RESISTOR Digita10   TYPES OF RESISTOR Preset10
( Preset resistor symbol IEC standard )

FIXED RESISTOR
Fixed value resistors have a defined ohmic resistance and are not adjustable. Fixed resistors are the most commonly used resistors and in general one of the most used electronic components. Fixed resistors are available in axial leaded and surface mount packages as well as more customized packages depending on their application. While axial leaded resistors used to be the most used resistors, nowadays the advantages of surface mount devices make the SMD resistors the most popular.

Fixed resistor symbols
The following resistor symbols are often used to depict resistors with a fixed value. The most used symbol is the international IEC resistor symbol displayed on the left but the American resistor symbol displayed on the right is also still used.

When variable resistors are used to tune or calibrate a circuit or application, trimmer potentiometers or trimpots are used, this are mostly small potentiometers mounted on the circuit board, which can be adjusted using a screwdriver.

We all know that rheostat is a variable resistor, usually with three terminals. Rheostat is not a single terminal that can be connected to either positive or negative.
It is basically a resistor, and as a resistor, either terminal can be connected to either side of the circuit since a resistor is not polar. ( Someone can correct me if I'm wrong )

SMD stands for Surface Mounted Device. An SMD is any electronic component that is made to use with SMT, or Surface Mount Technology. SMT was developed to meet the ongoing desire for printed circuit board manufacture to use smaller components and be faster, more efficient, and cheaper.
Axial Leaded Resistor is a High Power, Non-Inductive, Ceramic Axial Lead Resistors from U.S. Resistor provide unique solutions in applications where carbon composition traditionally have been used, often replacing 2 or more with a single ceramic resistor. Some areas where the axial lead resistors are being used are in testing equipment, high voltage power supplies and cable connectors, soft start, pulse waveform, EMF / RFI test circuits, high voltage power supplies and RC snubber circuits.

A resistor is an electrical component that limits or regulates the flow of electrical current in an electronic circuit. Resistors can also be used to provide a specific voltage for an active device such as a transistor.

Based on my knowledge that the resistors are the most fundamental and commonly used of all the electronic components, to the point where they are almost taken for granted but they play a vital role within a circuit. The principal job of a resistor within an electrical or electronic circuit is to “resist” (hence the name Resistor), regulate or to set the flow of electrons current through them by using the type of conductive material from which they are composed. Resistors can also be connected together in various series and parallel combinations to form resistor networks which can act as voltage droppers, voltage dividers or current limiters within a circuit. Resistors are what are called “Passive Devices”, that is they contain no source of power or amplification but only attenuate or reduce the voltage or current signal passing through them. This attenuation results in electrical energy being lost in the form of heat as the resistor resists the flow of electrons through it.

Then a potential difference is required between the two terminals of a resistor for current to flow. This potential difference balances out the energy lost. When used in DC circuits the potential difference, also known as a resistors voltage drop, is measured across the terminals as the circuit current flows through the resistor. Most types of resistor are linear devices that produce a voltage drop across themselves when an electrical current flows through them because they obey Ohm’s Law, and different values of resistance produces different values of current or voltage. This can be very useful in Electronic circuits by controlling or reducing either the current flow or voltage produced across them we can produce a voltage-to-current and current-to-voltage converter.

resistor is the most ubiquitous of electronic components. They are a critical piece in just about every circuit. And they play a major role in our favorite equation, Ohm’s Law.

the VARIABLE resistor comprises a fixed resistive element along which a slider passes. The variable or adjust able resistor forms a potential divider in which the overall resistance between the two end points remains the same, but the ratio of the two resistors in the legs changes.

the FIXED resistors are by far the most widely used type of resistor. They are used in electronics circuits to set the right conditions in a circuit. Their values are determined during the design phase of the circuit, and they should never need to be changed to "adjust" the circuit

What is the common type of a resistor?

Most of used resistors are the carbon composition resistors.. Carbon resistors are a cheap general purpose resistor used in electrical and electronic circuits. Their resistive element is manufactured from a mixture of finely ground carbon dust or graphite (similar to pencil lead) and a non-conducting ceramic (clay) powder to bind it all together.

Is there a load or a circuit which has a 2 different resistor?

Devices called resistors are built to provide precise amounts of resistance in electric circuits. ... The larger the resistor is, the more power it can safely dissipate without suffering damage. Any device that performs some useful task with electric power is generally known as a load.

Components of an electrical circuit or electronic circuit can be connected in many different ways. The two simplest of these are called series and parallel and occur frequently. Components connected in series are connected along a single path, so the same current flows through all of the components.

Before testing a resistor to see if its good or bad, you must know its value. Resistors decrease the current flowing through a circuit. Each is made to work under a limited load, with the ability to decrease a specific amount of current. The bands around the components indicate resistor values with a color code. Determine the value of a resistor and then test it to see if it meets that standard.

for me it depends on what components you have connected...and current goes in, same as the current goes out. In series ,the same current will recieve by all component, but in parallel ,the current that divided on how many components you have connected.
